Back-to back Championships for Uni Boys!

The University High School Boys Swimming & Diving team won their second consecutive CIF Southern Section Division I Championship with a decisive 97-point lead over second-place Dana Hills at the Riverside City College Aquatics Center last night. Swimmer Danny Tran had a perfect night, winning the 200-yard Individual Medley and 100-yard Backstroke, earning the team 44 points. Danny also swam the backstroke leg of Uni’s winning 200-yard Medley Relay team, along with Andrew Knoell (butterfly), Judd Howard (breaststroke), and Will Hofstadter (freestyle).

Will had an excellent meet as well, taking second place in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, earning the team 38 individual event points. Judd Howard’s second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and sixth-place in the 200-yard Individual Medley netted another 34 points for the team, while Ken Takahashi earned 31 points for taking third in the IM and eighth place in the 500-yard freestyle. And in case you didn’t notice, that means Uni boys took first, third and sixth place in the 200 IM!

The 200-yard Freestyle Relay team of Alejandro Ortiz, Matt Wong, Ken Takahashi and Will Hofstadter finished fourth, earning 34 points, and the 400-yard Freestyle Relay team of Andrew Knoell, Alejandro Ortiz, Danny Tran and Ken Takahashi closed out the meet by adding 30 points with their sixth-place finish.

Other double-digit individual event contributors were Andrew Knoell, who provided 27 points with his sixth-place finish in the 100-yard Butterfly and ninth place in the 100-yard Backstroke, and George Horvath, who earned 14 points with a seventh-place finish in the 500 free.

The Uni Girls squad finished in 25th place overall with a total of 32.5 points. The 200-yard Medley Relay team of Lauren Weins, Joyce Yang, Kathy Lim and Princess Ferguson-Nguyen earned 16 points for their 11th-place finish and they will be going to the inaugural State Championship Meet next week. The 200-yard Freestyle Relay team of Princess Ferguson-Nguyen, Kathy Lim, Anne Jang and Celine Nie earned 10 points and Lauren Weins earned 6.5 points for her 12th-place finish in the 100-yard Backstroke.
